The Sound That Shaped the 1960s

Looking back at the heyday of classic rock, there was one instrument that stood out from the rest. It was a massive 350-pound (approximately 159 kg) instrument that forever changed the way we think about music production. At the heart of this monstrous instrument were tape recorders, one for each note on the keyboard, each playing its own recorded sound. While this instrument had its limitations—only 8 seconds of tape per key and a bulky casing—it boasted a multi-timbral and true polyphonic "engine," making it incredibly impressive for its time.

Famous for its use in The Beatles' hit "Strawberry Fields Forever," and used by countless artists including The Moody Blues, The Rolling Stones, and legendary progressive rock artists, this sound was truly a "must-have" sound of the 1960s. While its use became outdated, its influence remains essential to modern music production.

Authenticity is key to the art.

With Mello, we aimed for a complete and authentic reproduction of this prolific instrument. To reproduce each of the 28 sounds in the best possible way, we multi-sampled dozens of original tapes using three different types of equipment. To recreate a live feel, keyboard noise and internal mechanical sounds are recorded in stereo, and everything, including tape noise and the sound when the keys are off, can be mixed to your liking.

Enhanced for Increased Versatility

To further enhance Mello's versatility, we've added several unique features, including analog-modeled tape delay, reverb, a custom unison mode for stereo sound without unwanted transposition or chorus effects, a switchable multimode filter, and a 3-band EQ. Mello delivers a warm, smooth tone indistinguishable from the original, making it a perfect homage to the iconic 1960s studio instrument in every way.
