The King of Polysynths
A faithful software recreation of the most popular analog polysynth of all time
Released in 1981, the JUPITER-8 is one of the most revered and sought-after polysynths of all time. Featured on countless hits across decades, its rich analog sound delivers unparalleled warm pads, soaring strings, and captivating lead tones. The JUPITER-8 software synthesizer lets you recreate this vintage icon, down to the circuit level, in your DAW or SYSTEM-8.
Why is it so special?
The JUPITER-8 is arguably the most popular analog polysynth of all time, and original units fetch extremely high prices on the used market. With its beautiful design, rugged construction, and exceptional sonic flexibility, this instrument represented the pinnacle of Roland engineering in the early 1980s. Its incredibly warm yet clear sound was deeply ingrained in many important musical genres that emerged at the time of its release, and its influence continues to this day, spanning a wide range of genres.
King-size sound.
In addition to its iconic looks and rugged construction, the JUPITER-8 is renowned for its unmistakable sound. Each of its eight voices features two stable VCOs with four selectable waveforms, allowing for cross-modulation and screaming sync sounds. Its creamy filter, featuring a 2-pole or 4-pole lowpass VCF and a non-resonant highpass filter, is a favorite among synth enthusiasts. Add to that the two envelopes, onboard arpeggiator, and extensive modulation capabilities, and you have a true legend.
Analog circuit operation (ACB).
Roland used proprietary circuit modeling technology to recreate the JUPITER-8 in your DAW or SYSTEM-8. The ACB process involves meticulous analysis of the original hardware, circuit diagrams, and other historical data. We then used this information to faithfully recreate the vintage instrument's circuit behavior, including all of the JUPITER-8's unique quirks and instabilities. This is what gives the JUPITER-8 software synthesizer its breathtakingly realistic sound and unique personality.
A legendary instrument with modern features.
In developing the JUPITER-8 plug-in, Roland felt it was important to stay true to the original's classic workflow and sonic grandeur. However, we've also added some modern touches, such as velocity sensitivity, an expanded oscillator range, an added effects section, and an enhanced built-in arpeggiator for increased flexibility. The LFO, arpeggiator, and effects are tempo-synced, and with a freely resizable, high-resolution UI and support for VST3, AAX, and AU formats, it fits perfectly into any production environment.
Adjust to your liking.
Vintage synthesizers like the JUPITER-8 featured internal trim controls, allowing engineers to fine-tune various analog components when they were out of spec. But sometimes, "out-of-spec" sounds can produce unique, interesting, or even extraordinary sounds. The newly added Circuit Mod feature, made possible by Roland's latest ACB technology, lets you sweep multiple trims with a single macro control. Combined with the Condition parameter, which simulates aging, you can recreate anything from a factory-fresh JUPITER-8 to a worn-out synth that hasn't been touched on a tech bench for decades.
Please feel free to take a look.
The sophisticated browser lets you freely explore the JUPITER-8's extensive factory presets, your own custom sounds, and patches downloaded from Roland Cloud. Search installed patch banks, sort results, rate your favorite patches, take notes, and quickly tweak them with the built-in Tweak panel.
Turn your SYSTEM-8 into a JUPITER-8.
The JUPITER-8 software synthesizer is fully integrated with the SYSTEM-8 keyboard. The JUPITER-8 plug-in panel can be adapted to match the SYSTEM-8 for intuitive, one-to-one control. Plus, the PLUG-OUT function lets you use the SYSTEM-8 as a standalone JUPITER-8 for studio or stage performance.
