SSL 4K G by Solid State Logic," the definitive official SL 4000 G channel strip plugin, is now 50% off at thelowest price ever for $74.

A Sound That Defines a Generation
Inheriting the legacy of the SL 4000 E, the SL 4000 G console appeared in 1987 as the pinnacle of the 4000 series and the final chapter of the 4000 B, E, and G trilogy. While the E series was renowned for its bold and aggressive tone, many studio professionals sought a smoother, more refined sound. In response, Solid State Logic introduced the SL 4000 G. This console features groundbreaking innovations such as redesigned microphone preamps, a Pink Knob '292' EQ, and an improved dynamics section, resulting in a more refined sound than the raw sound of the previous E series.

From London's Olympic Studios to Los Angeles' Record Plant, the SSL 4000 G console quickly became a staple in studios worldwide. Its unparalleled sound character and incredible versatility transcended genres, dominating countless hit charts across pop, rock, and hip-hop. Renowned engineers and producers like Spike Stent, Bob Rock, Dr. Dre, and MixedByAli created timeless classics with the SL 4000 G.

Solid State Logic's SSL 4K G plugin is the definitive SSL 4000 G channel strip. Developed by the original designers to faithfully recreate the sound of the era, the 4K G features meticulous circuit modeling down to the component level of the Pink '292' and Black '242' EQs, and a tighter, more refined dynamics section, faithfully reproducing the iconic sound that underpinned countless legendary albums.

Known for its exceptionally smooth and refined EQ characteristics, the 4K G stands out from other EQ devices with its improved and expanded tone-shaping capabilities. First introduced alongside the classic 4000 G console, the 4K G features the iconic HMF x3 and LMF ÷3 selector switches inherited from the iconic "292" EQ. These switches allow the HMF and LMF bands to be shifted to the extremes of the frequency spectrum, enabling the creation of unique and expressive EQ curves. This flexibility allows for the formation of bell curves using wide or narrow Q settings in the low and high frequencies, in addition to standard LF and HF shelf controls. The "292" EQ itself employed a variable Q design, naturally producing wide curves with small boosts or cuts. This characteristic made it popular among engineers who wanted to perform gentle tone-shaping, particularly on vocals, while the constant Q design of the "242" EQ was often preferred for more precise tasks such as drum processing.

The pink-labeled "292" HF and LF shelves offer a steeper response and a distinctive "undershoot/overshoot" characteristic at corner frequencies compared to the "242," further enhancing their appeal. This subtle resonance imbues the shelves with energy and shape, creating a gentle tone that many engineers describe as "musical."

Naturally, the SSL 4K G plugin wouldn't be complete without the meticulous modeling of the 4000 G dynamics section. This results in a tighter sound and superior transient control. Leading up to the release of the SL 4000 G console, the channel dynamics underwent numerous circuit improvements throughout the 4000 series era. From the aggressive compression of the 4000 B to the beloved "pop" sound of the 4000 E, the 4000 G brought a refined tightness to its compression characteristics, playing a crucial role in creating more sophisticated and denser mixes. This precision is what makes 4K G Dynamics so influential in today's complex productions.

In addition to the option to use the classic Jensen transformer model microphone preamps from the 4000 E series with adjustable saturation, the 4K G also features variable microphone input impedance control inherited from the FX383 G series outboard units, SSL's first outboard channel strip. Used in conjunction with microphone input saturation, the variable impedance control offers a wealth of creative tone-shaping options, perfect for lo-fi drum crunch, for example.

Taking it a step further, the 4K G incorporates output fader VCA modeling, adding a rich layer of harmonic saturation across the entire channel strip. Enabling "HQ" mode activates intelligent oversampling, reproducing the sound of the 4000 G console with unprecedented precision and fidelity. Living up to its name, the 4K G offers excellent integration with SSL U-Series controllers and SSL 360° plug-in mixers, joining the SSL Channel Strip collection alongside the 4K E, 4K B, and Channel Strip 2.
