Superhet by Sonatura Audio, the world's first virtual synthesizer based on the heterodyn, is available for a limited time free.
Overview
Heterodyne processing was invented by Reginald Fessenden in 1901 as a way to make certain radio signals easier to hear. This method generates two new frequencies from two input frequencies. One new frequency is the sum of the two input frequencies, and the other is the difference. For example, if there are input signals of 440 Hz and 643 Hz, the frequencies generated by the heterodyne method will be 1,083 Hz (sum) and 203 Hz (difference). The original signals no longer exist.
While the new frequency can obviously be calculated precisely, it will feel somewhat random until you get used to it. Superhet allows you to create heterodyne frequencies using only a MIDI keyboard and also features switchable pitch envelopes and amplitude ADSR control.
Experiment first, and once you've mastered it, start creating new types of music you've never heard before.
We highly recommend reading the manual to understand Superhet's innovative uses and the purpose of its controls.
Identify the MIDI note number closest to the heterodyned pitch. Note that the sum and difference calculations are not exact pitches in the 12-tone scale. This allows for some very interesting scaled and stretched tunings. Sorting, filtering, and search are possible. This is very useful for creating new melodies or decoding existing ones.
Sample JSON File for Loading Samples
Loading your own samples is easy! Instructions are provided in the manual. We also provide a sample JSON file that you can edit for your own samples.
How it Works and How to Use It
This article details why it's different from other plugins, the invention and use of the heterodyne method, and how to start making music with Superhet.
It's a little difficult to understand, but when used properly, it can produce some interesting and interesting electronic sounds. Another use case would be to program sequences numerically, a sound reminiscent of early electroacoustic music.
