Nearly 40 years after its release, the influence of the TR-909 drum machine is still heard and felt. Now, the 909 is available as a software plug-in. The speaker-shaking power of the original is enhanced with new features that expand sonic possibilities and enable faster, smoother programming.

Analog/Digital Hybrid, Before It Even Existed

In 1983, Roland followed up the hugely influential TR-808 with the TR-909. At the time, digital sampling of acoustic drums was all the rage, but the sounds of the equipment at the time were overly tuned and, frankly, far from authentic. With the 909, Roland engineers adopted a hybrid approach, using tunable analog circuits for the kick, snare, claps, and toms, while employing digital sampling for the cymbals.

Sibling Rivalry

Only around 10,000 TR-909s were ever produced, but their enduring influence continues to be felt on dance floors today. Just as the TR-808 dominated rap and hip-hop, the TR-909 left an indelible mark on electronic music styles like techno, house, acid, and industrial. When you think of floor-shaking dance music, this is the sound that comes to mind.

Roland's software version not only faithfully models the TR-909's analog circuitry, but also uses the original sample ROM and models the early digital technology found in the vintage hardware. This attention to detail results in an authentic TR-909, capturing all of the sonic characteristics that have long made it a favorite of electronic and dance music producers worldwide. The plug-in also features groundbreaking new features for modern music production.

Hardware Integration

The TR-909 software instrument works seamlessly with Roland's TR-8S Rhythm Performer and TR-09 Roland Boutique hardware. Transfer TR-8S patterns directly to the TR-909 plug-in, create beats on the go and send them back to the hardware, or use the TR-8S or TR-09 for hands-on control of the plug-in directly.
