A sound that represents a generation
Continuing the tradition of the SL 4000 E, the SL 4000 G console was released in 1987 as the pinnacle of the 4000 series and the final chapter of the 4000 B, E, and G trilogy. While the E series was known for its bold and aggressive tone, many studio professionals were looking for a smoother, more refined sound. In response, Solid State Logic introduced the SL 4000 G. This console featured groundbreaking innovations, including redesigned mic preamps, Pink Knob '292' EQ, and an improved dynamics section, resulting in a more refined sound than the rough-edged sound of the previous E series.

From Olympic Studios in London to the Record Plant in Los Angeles, the SSL 4000 G console quickly became a staple in studios around the world. Its unparalleled sonic character and incredible versatility transcend genres, propelling countless chart hits across pop, rock and hip-hop. Notable engineers and producers such as Spike Stent, Bob Rock, Dr. Dre and MixedByAli have created timeless classics with the SL 4000 G.

Solid State Logic's SSL 4K G plug-in is the definitive version of the SSL 4000 G channel strip. Developed by the original designers to faithfully recreate the sound of the era. With detailed circuit modeling down to the component level of the Pink '292' and Black '242' EQs and a tighter, more refined dynamics section, the 4K G recreates the iconic sound behind some of the greatest albums of all time.

Known for its extremely smooth and refined EQ characteristics, the 4K G stands out from other EQ devices with its improved and expanded tone shaping capabilities. First introduced with the classic 4000 G console, the 4K G features HMF ×3 and LMF ÷3 selector switches inherited from the iconic "292" EQ. These switches allow the HMF and LMF bands to be shifted to the outer extremes of the frequency spectrum, allowing for the creation of unique and expressive EQ curves. This flexibility allows for shaping bell curves using wide or narrow Q settings at the low and high frequencies, in addition to the standard LF and HF shelf controls. The "292" EQ itself has a variable Q design, which allows for a naturally wide curve with small boosts or cuts. This characteristic made it popular among engineers doing gentle tone shaping, especially on sources such as vocals, while the constant Q design of the "242" EQ was often preferred for more precise tasks such as drum processing. The Pink Label 292 HF and LF shelves have a steeper response than the 242, and a distinctive "undershoot/overshoot" characteristic at the corner frequencies, which makes them even more appealing. This subtle resonance gives the shelves energy and shape, resulting in a gentle tone that many engineers describe as "musical".

Naturally, no SSL 4K G plug-in would be complete without the meticulous modeling of the 4000 G dynamics section. This results in a tighter sound and better transient control. By the time the SL 4000 G console was released, the channel dynamics had undergone numerous circuit improvements throughout the 4000 series era. From the aggressive compression of the 4000 B to the beloved "pop" sound of the 4000 E, the 4000 G brought a refined tightness to the compression characteristics that played a crucial role in creating more elaborate and dense mixes. It is this precision that makes the 4K G Dynamics so enduringly influential in today's complex productions.

In addition to the option to use the classic Jensen transformer model mic preamp 4000 E-series with adjustable saturation, the 4K G also features a variable mic input impedance control inherited from SSL's first outboard channel strip, the FX383 G-series outboard unit. Combined with the mic input saturation, the variable impedance control offers a wealth of creative tone shaping options, perfect for lo-fi drum crunch, for example.

Going one step further, the 4K G features output fader VCA modeling, adding a rich layer of harmonic saturation to the entire channel strip. Enabling "HQ" mode activates intelligent oversampling, providing the most detailed and faithful reproduction of the 4000 G console sound ever. Living up to its name, the 4K G joins the 4K E, 4K B and Channel Strip 2 in the SSL Channel Strip collection, working perfectly with SSL U-Series controllers and SSL 360° plug-in mixers.
