Overview

When gating an audio signal, it is often easier to use an external trigger (also called a side chain). MIDIGator allows you to control an audio gate with any MIDI signal. To make setup quick and easy, the sidechain trigger is based on every note on each channel, as well as the sustain pedal on each channel.

When you start MIDIGator, the gate is fully closed and will not open until a MIDI note is played or the sustain pedal is pressed. When either of these events are detected, the gate opens fully. But that's not all! The depth of the gate effect can be adjusted from 100% (normal) to 0%. This allows you to always let some of the original audio signal through, and only "pulses" when the gate opens.

The attack and release controls allow for a smoother response, smoothing out the audio in and out. And finally, the dynamics control finishes off the whole panel. The dynamics control adjusts how open the gate is depending on the velocity of the incoming note. (The sustain pedal always acts as the note with the highest velocity.)

If multiple notes are held, the dynamics is controlled by the velocity of the first played note, and the gate will remain open at that setting until all notes are released.
