【Free!】Wonderful! High Quality Jazz Drum VST! Virtuosity Drums by Versilian Studios & Karoryfer Lecolds
Virtuosity Drums by Versilian Studios& Karoryfer Lecolds is a high quality free jazz drum VST.
Virtuosity Drums is an open source (Creative Commons 0) modern jazz drum kit library played with sticks, recorded at Virtuosity Musical Instruments in Boston, Massachusetts.
Drummer Austin McMahon's performance was recorded on a shop's "house kit" that reproduces a typical setting of a live house or club. It is recorded in the style of a live recording. It can mix six microphone positions and has fine control, so it can be used for a variety of genres.
Recording took place at Virtuosity Musical Instruments in the Symphony District of Boston, Massachusetts. Virtuosity is a hotspot for the local jazz community and serves as a weekly venue for sessions and other performances.
Samples were performed by drummer Austin McMahon. Austin plays regularly with the Jerry Burgonzi Quartet and has recently performed or recorded with Sean Jones, George Garzone, Joe Lovano, Lionel Loueke, Ben Monder, Large Rand, Kate McGarry, Noah Preminger, Jason Palmer and Grace Kelly.
Austin currently teaches in the jazz department at the New England Conservatory of Music's Preparatory and Continuing Education Division in Boston, Massachusetts.
Up to 36 Dynamic Layers
The snare, toms, and kick were recorded with a special "wave" technique, where the drummer plays freely with dynamics rather than recording individual dynamic levels. The result is up to 36 dynamic layers with no round robins. These instruments benefit greatly from natural velocity variations, making them ideal for playing live with keyboards or virtual drums.
The cymbals, on the other hand, use a small number of individual velocity layers with four round robins to accommodate high repetition situations.
Detailed mics
Blue Hummingbirds were used for overheads. The toms and cymbals have great clarity and are extremely low in noise. For mids, a Samar VL-373A stereo ribbon microphone was used, providing a full, rich sound with a gentle roll-off of the high frequencies.
Two sE RN17s are used as room/main mics in a NOS configuration for clear articulation and natural audience sound. For the snare, a Shure 545SD, the ancestor of the SM57, is used, and for the kick, another Hummingbird.
As a treat, an old Shure Hercules from the 1950s is provided for a "vintage"/lo-fi sound.
EXTENDED CONTROL
The custom GUI, designed by Simon Autenrieth of Versilian and implemented by D. Smolken of Karoryfer, offers a level of control not usually found in freeware.
The mics can be mixed with volume, bleed and width controls. The kick can be attenuated for a more pop sound, the snare can be turned on/off, or the "Epic" knob can be used to add an octave lower to the sample for cinematic impact.
The various Tune controls on the right allow you to adjust the pitch of each part of the kit.
For professional users, the whole drum map can be adjusted and modified to suit your needs.
