The Instrument That Started a Movement
Iconic Acid House Bass Tone for Your DAW
With its unique sound signature bursting with warmth, energy, and character, the Roland TB-303 Bass Line was a defining feature of the acid house movement of the late 1980s. Widely misunderstood upon its release in 1981, the true revolution began a few years later, when electronic music producers rediscovered this unusual instrument and captivated a generation with its hypnotic, fluid sound. The TB-303 Software Bass Line delivers this historic instrument as a DAW plug-in with circuit-level sonic accuracy and convenient modern features.
Humble Beginnings
Some instruments are groundbreaking inventions that create entire musical genres. The TB-303 is one such influential instrument, but it wasn't always so well-received. When Roland released the TB-303 in 1981, it was marketed as a computer-controlled bass machine simulating a traditional bass guitar, but it didn't gain much traction. Innovative electronic musicians eventually discovered the 303 on the secondhand market and found new uses for its signature smooth low end.
Iconic Status
Early house music pioneers used the 303 in new ways, accidentally creating the sound that would later become known as "acid." This new sound ignited other electronic music genres, and similar to the Roland TR-808's influence on hip-hop, the TB-303 played a crucial role in the rave culture of the late '80s and early '90s. While we may never fully understand why the 303's sound makes people want to dance, its power, influence, and enduring ability to get the party going are undeniable.
Plugging in the TB-303
The TB-303 Software Bass Line takes this classic instrument to a new level. Using Analog Circuit Behavior modeling, the virtual TB-303 faithfully recreates the captivating tone of the original, perfectly blending with classic Roland instruments like the TR-909. It perfectly recreates the iconic interface and distinctive crunch and squelch sounds, while adding new features that would have attracted attention back in the day.
Edit Window
The 303's new edit window is one of its most impressive features. For the first time, you can create and edit patterns using a visual interface. See the DNA of preset patterns, edit variations, or start from scratch and step-edit new patterns. Create diverse patterns with up to six octaves of range, user-defined scales, accents, slides, pitch manipulation, and more. The new randomize/generate function allows for endless creation of classic 303 patterns.
Five Play Modes
The TB-303 software synthesizer expands experimental possibilities with five new play modes (Forward/Reverse/FWD&REV/Invert/Random). These new features allow sonic alchemists to freely manipulate and change the direction of their bass.
More Memory and Control
For the first time, the TB-303 can store up to 64 patterns and 64 patches per bank. Eight variations of a pattern remain accessible via the UI faceplate. In addition to 32 preset patterns and 48 unique sounds, the 303 also comes with sound templates for free exploration.
Secret Panel
A hidden panel on the right edge of the 303 unlocks a variety of new timbre-adjustment capabilities. Experience expanded circuit tweaks with the new VCF Trim, Vintage Condition, and Master Tune knobs. Built-in effects like tempo-syncable distortion and delay are sure to inspire new ideas.
Virtual Acid: A New Generation of TB-303
