How does RANDOM work?

RANDOM essentially employs neural network principles to navigate an infinite array of completely unique sounds.

Central to this experience is the transformative power of the Random Wheel, a gateway to two distinct systems: synth and resonator. With each turn of the wheel, DEVIANCE determines the degree of randomization through hundreds of parameters.

Controls

The sonic landscape is shaped by the influence of STRESS, which determines the length of the synth's decay.

The SPIKE control achieves an aggressive quality, enabling darker, warmer tones on the one hand and a more assertive, edgy palette on the other.

BLEED and FLUID subtly affect the resonators, adjusting color and presence.

Artist Collaboration - Phazz

BEATSURFING met Phazz in 2016. Inspired by his work, the two discussed music production on a producer/geek level. When BEATSURFING began developing plugins, the team knew they wanted to create something groundbreaking together.

As BEATSURFING began preparing for plugin development, ideas began to flow. BEATSURFING met with Phazz at headquarters multiple times, sketching and brainstorming on whiteboards to define the "RANDOM" experience.

Ultimately, BEATSURFING aimed for a synthesizer that would take users on an exciting new journey in sound design, resampling, and improvisation. Phazz had a clear sonic direction in mind: inharmonics, aliasing, resonating, flanging, and hard percussive tones.

The RANDOM plug-in embodies BEATSURFING's vision of combining depth and simplicity, giving users total control over their sound. Creating RANDOM was a journey of invention and imagination for Phazz and BEATSURFING. BEATSURFING is constantly striving to ensure that RANDOM inspires new creative challenges.

1st Engine / Sloth

Based on a classic analog rhythmbox-style snare. This snare sound features a distinctive, crisp attack and long decay, creating a distinctive "bottom" sound. It's highly regarded for its warm, distinctive sound and ability to cut through the mix.

Four macros let you fine-tune your sound to your liking. Macro A adjusts the volume from noise to body FM. Macros B/C/D adjust transient, decay, and tone brightness.

2nd Engine / Gluttony

This engine was developed around Foley samples, often used to enhance tracks by adding ambient and real-world noise. Engine 2 is ideal for adding depth and texture to beats.

Macros change the body amount (A), transient and decay brightness (B/C), and the final macro, D, introduces a slight noise change with each hit.

3rd Engine / Rage

Old-school boom-bap style snare.

A = Noise amplitude modulation

B = Transient brightness

C = Decay brightness

D = Room brightness

4th Engine / Desire

Water-type trap

A = Modulates a long low-pass filter and a short high-pass filter, between a short low-pass filter and a long high-pass filter.

B = Water type (e.g., river)

C = Droplet amount – adds droplet sounds after the main hit

D = Introduces a slight change with each hit.

5th Engine / Envy

A = Low Noise

B = Medium Noise

C = High Noise

D = Sustain

6th Engine / Greed

Melodic Snare Type

A = Reverb Level
