The Birth of a Legend

In 1980, the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer was released as an easy-to-use composition tool for musicians. Due to the rising cost of memory at the time, Roland engineers began creating sounds using analog synthesis rather than samples. Through a series of fortunate coincidences, the unique sound created by the company's proprietary transistor technology established the 808's unique soundscape. However, the TR-808 didn't deliver what many would call a "traditional" or "realistic" drum sound, and many people shied away from it at the time, with only around 12,000 units produced.

As soon as adventurous musicians and producers picked up the TR-808 and began tweaking its knobs, the world literally began to realize its everlasting impact on music.
